Education of Students with Exceptionalities Program (BS, MS combined)
The Education of Students with Exceptionalities (ESE) Program is a linked Junior-Senior-Master's degree program. The degree major is a three-year program that culminates in the simultaneous awarding of the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree and the Master of Science (MS) degree. Students must be successful in being admitted to and completing the requirements of the MS degree program in order to receive the BS degree.
New students are admitted to the program fall semester only. Applications must be submitted by March 1 of the spring semester for fall semester admission. Applications must be complete and applicants must have met all prerequisites identified in the link below prior to acceptance. In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to the program as Juniors, students must also be able to meet the requirements for admission to graduate school in the School of Teacher Education, College of Education and in the University. The ESE Program is designed to prepare individuals for careers as public school teachers of students with disabilities including learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, mental disabilities, and physical disabilities and/or for employment in public or private agencies that provide services to infants/toddlers and/or adults with disabilities. Upon completion of all program requirements, a graduate is eligible for Florida ESE teacher certification and English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teaching Endorsement.
In the MS year of study, students elect an area of specialization. Students complete academic coursework, a specialization practicum, and student teaching in their areas of specialization. Specializations include:
- Autism
- Severe or Profound Disabilities
- Transition
- High Incidence Disabilities
- Pre-K Disabilities
- Infant Toddler Development
Specialization coursework in Autism, Severe/Profound Disabilities, and Pre-K Disabilities meet Florida Department of Education requirements for state endorsements in the respective areas. Coursework in early intervention meets Florida Department of Health requirements for the Infant/Toddler Development Specialist Certificate.
