Mathematics Education

Mathematics Education Program Suspended: This program has been suspended due to budget limitations; no new students are being accepted. Students who have reached junior status by Fall Term 2009, have been fully admitted to the major, and are able to complete the program by Spring Term 2011 will be able to continue. Others must select a different major.

Undergraduate students who are interested in teaching mathematics or sciences in middle or high school have the opportunity to pursue their goals by participating in the FSU-Teach program. This program is designed specifically to prepare teachers of mathematics and the sciences to meet the needs of today's adolescents and the world of tomorrow. Please find information about FSU-Teach, which is a collaborative effort of the College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences, at http://fsu-teach.fsu.edu or contact Dr. Sherry Southerland (ssoutherland@fsu.edu).

Welcome to Mathematics Education at Florida State University. The mathematics education program offers degrees at the bachelor, master, specialist and doctoral levels. Two undergraduate programs leading to middle grades mathematics (5-9) and secondary mathematics (6-12) certification have met Florida Department of Education Continued Program Approval standards and are part of the NCATE accredited teacher education unit. In addition to the preparation of teacher candidates for middle and high school mathematics, the graduate programs offer opportunities to join faculty in creating a learning community that strives to improve the learning and teaching of mathematics in all contexts. Students have an opportunity to join faculty across the university in education research projects, curriculum and assessment initiatives, technological innovations and teacher professional development programs.

Our doctoral and master degree programs draw students from across the nation and internationally with strong academic capabilities and broad professional experiences.
