English Education

The English Education program offers degrees at the undergraduate, master's specialist, and doctoral levels. While the traditional focus of our programs has been on preparation of teachers of middle and high school English itself, we have expanded that focus to include attention to the many print and non-print literacies that all of today's adolescents, from middle school through early college, need in order to participate in the life of society in the 21st century. This expanded focus includes, among the traditional issues of teaching writing, language, and literature, coursework that gives attention to issues including the ways that technology can enhance teaching and learning, the roles that English teachers assume when working with non-native speakers of English who are English Language Learners (ELLs), the implications for expanded definitions of literacy for the 21st century, and the English teacher's role in reading instruction.
Students who have graduated from our undergraduate program are currently working as classroom teachers in middle and high schools across the United States; those who have graduated from our master's and specialists programs are middle and high school teachers and college instructors, as well as curriculum specialists, state testing specialists, and textbook company representatives. Those who have graduated from the doctoral program in English Education are active as university professors, researchers, and leaders in the field.
