Dr. Susan Nelson Wood, Associate Professor, English Education, studies the connection between teaching and students' literacy growth. Currently, she is investigating the relationship between Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and reading comprehension. Since joining the faculty at FSU in 1999, she has published widely, in journals such as Action in Teacher Education, English Journal, SIGNAL, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Florida Reading Quarterly, Kentucky English Bulletin, American Journal of Health Studies, Journal of School Violence, as well as other periodicals; co-edited the book, The nearness of you: Students and teachers writing online (Teachers & Writers Collaborative); and written Florida standards: A handbook for teaching in the sunshine state (Prentice Hall). Her third book, Bridging literacy scholars with today's best classroom practices (forthcoming, Christopher Gordon Publishers) is co-authored with colleagues Dr. Sharilyn Steadman and Dr. John Simmons. Tenaciously, Dr. Wood's scholarship continues to incorporate the writing of fiction.

As a member of the faculty and coordinator of the English Education program, Dr. Wood teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in English education, including methods at the middle and high school level, issues and trends, composition, and reading. She holds a B.A. and M.A. in English from Eastern Kentucky University and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Florida. She has also attended Bread Loaf School of English in Vermont.

Over the course of her teaching career, she has taught Head Start, self-contained fourth grade, seventh and eighth-grade language arts and reading, adult ESOL, gifted tenth-grade English, high school reading, college composition, and teacher education. As a writing consultant, Dr. Wood also worked for the Kentucky DOE Writing Program helping to design and implement state-mandated writing portfolios.

Professionally active, Dr. Wood directs the FSU Writing Project and organizes the annual FSU Writing Project Writing Summit. She also participates in the American Educational Research Association, the National Council for Teachers of English, the International Reading Association, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the Florida Council of Teachers of English, and the Florida Reading Association.
