Dr. Leslie Aspinwall, associate professor, is interested in how students learn mathematics at all levels. He spent six years on the faculty in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and 11 years at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Florida. He was a teacher for the Jefferson County Board of Education in Birmingham, Alabama, for four years. He is the former Tennessee Coordinator for the Eisenhower Math/Science Regional Consortium at AEL and former Tennessee Director for the American Mathematics Competitions. He has received internal and external funding for research, for service for public school teachers, and for technology-based curriculum development. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in pure mathematics from the University of Alabama, a Master of Arts in applied mathematics from the University of West Florida, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics education from Florida State University. His current research interests focus on students' written and verbal expressions of mathematical concepts, imagery and visualization in mathematics learning, and conceptual understanding of the derivative and integral functions in elementary calculus. He complements research and teaching with service to the university, to mathematical and educational organizations, and to school districts.
