Emeritus Status
Criteria and Application Procedures for
Emeritus Status
The title Professor Emeritus is intended to recognize meritorious service to the College of Education and the Florida State University over a period of time. The title is a distinction bestowed by the University on retired faculty. It is given in recognition of meritorious service to the University as teacher and scholar. Award of the title is considered an honor and will not be automatically conferred on all retiring faculty.
A recommendation for emeritus status originates from the faculty of the Department, and should be supported by the faculty of the Department, the Faculty Council of the College, and the Dean of the College. The recommendation for emeritus status should be transmitted by the Dean through the Dean of Faculties to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President of the University.
Standards
The honor Professor Emeritus will be bestowed only if all the following eligibility criteria are met:
- Attained the rank of Professor or has been promoted to Associate Professor at the Florida State University.
- Awarded tenure.
- Accumulated at least ten years of academic service at the University including the last five years before retirement. [Periods of Leave-with-pay will count towards years of service (for example, sabbatical leave, administrative leave, maternity leave, and disability leave).]
- Accumulated twenty years of service to education.
- Meets standards of performance in teaching, research and service expected within the particular department of unit of the College.
- Has made superior contributions in at least one of the categories of teaching, research and service recognized by the College.
- Fully retired or within the last year of service to the University.
- Recommended by two-thirds (2/3) of his/her colleagues in the Department in which the majority of service has been provided. [In the event the Department no longer exists, the recommendation shall come from those with whom the faculty member has worked, or, if appropriate, the Dean shall assign a committee to make recommendations.]
Procedures
Faculty members, Department Chairs or the Dean of the College may make nominations. The Department Chair is responsible (in concert with the nominator) for compiling information to support the award according to the criteria listed above.
Supporting documentation must include up-to-date curriculum vitae and a letter of support from the departmental chairperson outlining the justification for the Emeritus recommendation.
All full-time faculty of the Department are entitled to vote on the nomination. For purposes of voting, a recommendation for emeritus status must be based on a two-thirds (2/3) vote in support of the nomination. The Department Chair then forwards the vote and all documentation to the Dean of the College for transmittal to the Faculty Council.
(The Academic Quality Committee on behalf of) the Faculty Council will review the documentation in support of the nomination and vote on whether to support the nomination. A vote to support must be based on a majority of the Council's membership present and voting at a regularly scheduled meeting. The President of the Faculty Council (via the academic quality committee) should then forward the vote of the Council and all documentation to the Dean of the College for review. The Dean is responsible for transmitting all documentation, including the results of the department faculty's vote, the vote of the Faculty Council, and the Dean's recommendation to the Dean of the Faculties.
