Pursuing a Minor in Education
Why?
Simply put -- options. The minor program is a Professional Training Option, which means it does not fulfill all of the requirements necessary to become a certified teacher. However, this option will make obtaining alternative certification in the state of Florida easier should a student decide to teach after graduation. By completing the program, students become valuable assets to educational institutions, gain the confidence to effectively share the knowledge from their selected field with middle and high school students. Taking advantage of this opportunity increases the value of a bachelor's degree! This is the perfect opportunity for students who are considering teaching but want to continue on their current educational path. Completing a minor in middle and secondary education provides an additional career option in specific fields such as social sciences, health or mathematics. Even if a student isn't planning to teach, this minor will allow the additional option of a smooth transition into a career that is rewarding and focused on the areas of study in the major.
This minor program has been approved by the Florida Department of Education as a Professional Training Option (PTO). The PTO is intended to provide introductory knowledge and skills necessary to teach in almost any subject area. Specifically, the coursework will focus on the basics of assessing students' instructional needs, classroom management, and methods of instruction.
