The College of Education’s CORE Symposium Series
Call for proposals
Each year FSU’s College of Education and the Council on Research in Education (CORE) plans to sponsor a Symposium Series around a critical issue for education in Florida or the nation. The program's goals are: (1) to stimulate research on issues related to education; (2) to stimulate faculty collaboration on cross-disciplinary issues; 3) to disseminate research being conducted within the COE; and 4) to serve as a resource to policymakers and practitioners alike as they work to improve education.
In 2007, the College and CORE will host the first of such a series, this year co-sponsored by ELPS. The Teacher Quality Symposium Series will bring together researchers from across the college with eminent scholars from around the nation to discuss ideas for improving teaching quality in the state. The series is expected to draw researchers from across the college and university, policy analysts from local and state organizations (e.g. MGT; FEA), school and district leaders, and policymakers and agency officials.
CORE is now soliciting proposals for the second Symposium Series to be held in the Fall of 2008. Research topics may cover a wide range of issues related to education. Awardees will receive up to $5,000 for symposia planning during the Spring of 2008. Up to $10,000 in additional funds will be awarded to the winners in the Fall of 2008 for the series’ execution. Proposals can come from faculty or postdoctoral researchers within the college, from full departments, or through collaborations among faculty members across departments.
Application Submission Requirements
All applications must include:
- Proposal (limited to 5 double-spaced pages) that addresses the following:
- Symposium series topic and its significance
- Brief review of relevant research/theory/policy literature
- Importance of topic to Florida and/or the nation
- List of potential presenters and topics of presentations. We do appreciate that these may change as the planning process develops. The first series will involve four outside presenters on two days (one in August; another in October). It will bring another three to four scholars/practitioners from across Florida to serve as panelists. Another six to eight COE researchers will participate as speakers and/or panelists. You are encouraged to email Lora Cohen-Vogel for the 2007 agenda (cohenvog@coe.fsu.edu).
- Proposed budget
- Allocation of the planning budget (this year an RA was helpful in the process)
- Allocation of the execution budget (e.g., space rental, honorariums & travel for speakers)
- Allocation of any contributions from department(s)
- Current curriculum vitas for each proposal writer(s)
All complete applications will be reviewed by the CORE committee for their consistency with the goals of the symposium series as described above. Reviews will also focus on the feasibility of the plans proposed. Preference will be given to applications with evidence of collaboration.
Proposals will be reviewed in the Fall, with funding decisions made within a month of the review date. The deadline for proposals is September 30, 2007 (to be reviewed in October). Submissions must be submitted electronically as a word document to Dr. Nancy T. Davis, Chair, CORE Committee at [ndavis@fsu.edu]. Contact Nancy (phone 850-644-7804) if you have questions regarding the application or submission process.
