Overview of Chalk and Wire for Students

What is Chalk and Wire?

Chalk and Wire is a web based e-portfolio system required for all students in the FSU Teacher Education Unit. You will purchase Chalk and Wire at the FSU bookstore. This subscription will be active for three years from your first sign in date. You have the option to renew your account after this 3 year period. You will use Chalk and Wire to create your FSU Program Assessment Portfolio. You can also make separate e-portfolios using Chalk and Wire for career and other purposes.

Why is Chalk and Wire required?

Chalk and Wire will be used to assess "Critical Tasks" that have been identified your FSU undergraduate or graduate initial teacher education certification program. The Florida Department of Education and the National Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (NCATE) now require all accredited programs to document individual student performance based on state and national standards. The FSU Chalk and Wire ePortfolio will document your performance on course assignments aligned with these standards. These special assignments are referred to as Critical Tasks. They should be identified in your course syllabus. Note: not all course assignments are Critical Task assignments.

How does Chalk and Wire work?

When you complete a "Critical Task" assignment in a course you will upload this assignment to your Assessment Portfolio (AP). Chalk and Wire will notify your instructor that the assignment is ready to be graded. The instructor will grade your Critical Task assignment using a rubric. All Critical Task assignments must be submitted and graded through Chalk and Wire. At the end of your program you will have a complete portfolio of Critical Task assignments that document your professional growth.

How do I begin using Chalk and Wire?

When you purchase your Chalk and Wire account at the FSU Bookstore you will receive a card containing login instructions. Within two week your FSU Program account should be populated with your program Critical Tasks.

Can I create other portfolios?

Yes. You can design your own portfolios separate from the FSU Assessment Portfolio. For example you might use Chalk and Wire to design an electronic job portfolio. You can actually design portfolios to target a particular type of position or career path. As the semester progresses we expect to have an active Volunteer FSU Student User Group to provide candidates with help, tips and ideas on how they can use Chalk and Wire. In addition there will be a help desk and online tutorials.
