In addition to 30 university credits of coursework or a master’s degree, Florida reading certification candidates are required to pass the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE), which has consisted of tests in reading, writing, mathematics, professional knowledge, and reading. If you would like further information on the certification test, please contact the Florida Department of Education at:
For study guides and test preparation information for the Certificate Exams for Florida Educators, go to http://www.cefe.usf.edu/mainfront.aspx. The reading endorsement is made up of 15 university credits or 300 inservice points that focus on six competencies that must be mastered before an endorsement can be obtained. This is not a stand-alone certificate, but may be added to an existing Florida Teaching Certificate. As of August 4, 2003, any teacher teaching a reading course at the secondary level will be required to have either the K-12 reading endorsement or K-12 reading certification. Additionally, any teacher teaching elementary reading courses must have one of the following qualifications: K-12 reading endorsement, K-12 reading certification, or elementary education certification. This requirement must be met by July 1, 2006.
