Joe Valente is an Assistant Professor in the Early Childhood Education Program within the School of Teacher Education.   He is also an affiliated faculty member with the Sociocultural and International Development Education Studies program in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.  Dr. Valente’s work in childhood studies, Deaf cultural studies, disability studies, and educational anthropology aims to critically investigate the contexts in which marginalized children and families live.

He received his B.A. from Bates College in English, and his M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Arizona State University in Early Childhood Education.  Prior to joining FSU, Dr. Valente was the Program Coordinator for the Office of Professional Field Experiences at Arizona State University, as well as a public school teacher in New York and Arizona.

Dr. Valente’s forthcoming research-novel d/Deaf and d/Dumb: A Portrait of a Deaf Kid as a Young Superhero will be published by Peter Lang in the Disability Studies in Education Series edited by Susan Gabel and Scot Danforth.  His most recent research project is an international comparative study looking at the enculturation of children in schools for the deaf.
