John P. Lunstrum, Ed. D., is Professor Emeritus of Social Science Education. He is a World War II veteran who began his teaching career in 1948 as a high school teacher of history and social sciences in Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended DePauw University and Indiana State University. He holds a B.S. degree in Social Sciences and Speech from Indiana State, an M.S. from Indiana State in history and guidance and an Ed. D. from Indiana University in Social Studies Education with a minor in History. He has also pursued graduate study in history at the National University of Mexico.
His experience is varied including some three years as radio/ and television announcer at NBC and CBS affiliates, ten years as a high school teacher of history and social sciences at Wiley High School in Terre Haute, Indiana and later as assistant professor and director of guidance at the Indiana State Laboratory School. After completing his doctorate at Indiana University (Bloomington) he joined the I.U. faculty. While an associate professor at I.U. he served in Sierra Leone, West Africa as an education consultant to the U.S. Peace Corps. After leaving Indiana he joined the University of Georgia faculty as Professor of Social Science Education.
In 1969 he came to Florida State as Associate Dean of Education and Professor of Social Science Education. In 1975 he received a postdoctoral grant to pursue advance study in reading problems. Upon his return to FSU he joined the faculty of Reading/Language Arts where he worked as a clinician in the Reading Clinic and taught courses in Reading /Language Arts. He rejoined the social studies education faculty in 1988, where he served as Program Coordinator and Head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Later he served as Resident Consultant in Social Studies in the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Botswana in Southern Africa.
His awards include a Rector scholarship to DePauw University, Honorary Visiting Lecturer, Fourah Bay, the University College of Sierra Leone, Outstanding School Volunteer, (Leon County Schools) and two FSU awards for excellence in teaching.
His research and publication interests focus on academic freedom, controversial issues, multicultural education, moral education, civic education and reading in the content areas.
