With a goal of building a contemporary graduate program in the teaching of English as a foreign/second language, Dr. Rick Jenks joined the faculty in 1971. Today, Florida State University is home to one of the nation's most respected and productive TESL/TEFL specializations and the leader in doctoral study in the southeastern U.S.A.
Dr. Jenks' background in applied linguistics and cross-cultural studies includes degrees in Modern Languages, Linguistics and Psychology, and Foreign/Second Language Education. He has taught students in rural, urban and international settings over a span of five decades, built and administered academic programs in Saudi Arabia, Panama and Florida, and directed doctoral research for more than fifty students. As Director of the Center for Intensive English Studies for 23 years, he supervised the instruction of more than 2,500 international students.
A member of the ETS-TOEFL Policy Council and TESOL's International Research Foundation (1999-02), he was the 2002 recipient of TESOL's Heinle & Heinle Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2001, he was honored with Florida State University's Presidential Award for Outstanding Service to Continuing Education.
