Alejandro José Gallard is an associate professor in the Science Education program at Florida Sate University. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in Science Education. Dr. Gallard has taught science at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Being bi-literate (English,Spanish), he also consults with, conducts evaluations, and teaches at the national level in many Spanish-speaking countries.

Teaching Interests:

His teaching assignments include Masters and Doctoral classes. He believes that students need experience developing a multitude of theoretical lenses that add meaning or provide explanations for their practical teaching experience. He also believes that students need to learn how to make teaching and learning science problematic and thus avoid a tendency to simplify a very difficult profession. There are two theoretical lenses in particular he tries to help students develop: gender and policy. Accordingly, he looks at the teaching and learning of science from a sociological in addition to a cognitive perspective.

Research Interests:

His areas of research include complexity thinking and positionality as well as the evaluation of educational programs at the national level in Spanish speaking countries. A new area of interest for him is the idea that teaching and learning science has become so complex that it is beyond the capability of teachers, teacher educators and policy makers. It is in this area he is using complexity thinking as a lens for making sense.

Current projects:

Dr. Gallard is the Hispanic SIG Program Chair for 2008-2009 of AERA. In addition, he is looking at education reform trying to understand the relationship between complexity thinking and education reform. Dr. Gallard continues working in Latin America with Servicios Integrales de Evaluación y Medición Educativas S.C. and Luis Morfín Lopez of the Organización de Estados Iberaméricano (OEI).

Personal Interests:

Dr. Gallard enjoys golfing, scuba diving, live theater
and cooking.
