Dr. Pamela Sissi Carroll is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor at the School of Teacher Education. A member of the FSU faculty since 1990, her teaching and research interests include literature instruction, young adult literature, middle grades literacy, and English teacher preparation. She has received four awards for teaching excellence while at Florida State University.
Carroll served as editor of The ALAN Review, the journal of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) that is devoted to young adult literature, from 1998-2003, and continues to work as a member of ALAN and as a member of the Board of Directors of NCTE. She is an active member and supporter, too, of the Florida Council of Teachers of English; at annual FCTE conferences, she especially enjoys seeing former students who are now teachers across the state. Carroll is also President-Elect of the Special Interest Group on Adolescent Literature (SIGNAL) and edits a SIGNAL column on young adult literature in classrooms, and in the Special Interest Group on Literature of the American Educational Research Association, for which she serves as secretary/treasurer.
Her publications include books, chapters, and articles on literature (including young adult literature), middle grades literacy, and teaching and learning practices in the English language arts classrooms. Her current projects include two new books, Integrated Literacy Instruction in the Middle Grades: Channeling Young Adolescents' Spontaneous Overflow of Energy (Allyn and Bacon, 2004) and 13 Ways of Looking at Student Teaching: A Guide for First-Time English Teachers, co-authored by FSU colleague Mike Rychlik (Heinemann, 2003). The Director of the North Florida Writing Project from 1991-1997, she is also currently involved as a principal investigator in a reading research grant, and as a co-PI in an arts in rural education grant. She received the Florida Council of Teachers of English Honor Award for contributions to "advance the teaching of the language arts" in October, 2003.
