General Services FAQ

1. What services does Support Services provide?

We service, maintain, and upgrade the College of Education's computers and network.

2. What computer parts does Support Services cover?

We essentially cover the cost of keyboards, monitors, mice, and all standard hardware inside the computer case for FSU owned P.C.'s on record as assigned to COE faculty or staff. These costs are covered by a specific allocation.

3. What about service to other COE computers?

Support Services does not cover the cost of parts needed for repairs to machines not listed in #2. We will however provide the labor necessary to maintain and repair all FSU owned computers for the College of Education.

4. How are charges for non-covered items handled?

Items not covered in #2 must first be approved by the departmental budget manager. An e-mail to Support Services (service@coe.fsu.edu) will be sufficient. All charges after March 31 will be charged to the departmental budget for the next fiscal year.

5. What do you recommend if I am purchasing a computer or peripherals?

The following link has been setup so you may look at what we recommend for computer specifications. (Computer Recommendation Page) You may send an email to Support Services (service@coe.fsu.edu) to request further information.

6. What Operating System will be installed on my computer?

All new PC systems are configured with Microsoft Windows XP Professional. All Macintosh systems are configured with OS X or OS 9.2.2 (we do not recommend); however, we do not have a Novell client that works with OS X.

7. May I have Windows VISTA installed on my system?

No. Support Services has evaluated this Operating System and has determined that the problems associated with deploying it on our network far outweigh any improvements or benefits that might be achieved by using this Operating System.

8. Will Support Services provide software updates for my computer?

Support Services will provide free updates for your COE computer at any time for free software, including VirusScan, Eudora Pro, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.

We will only provide Operating System and Microsoft Office updates with standard upgrades which are on a three to four year rotation. If you wish to have these updates sooner than your standard upgrade, the departmental budget manager may request them and Support Services will charge the department's budget for the software, or licenses may be purchased directly from User Services. Call Support Services once you have received the licenses, and we will schedule the installation.

9. Will Support Services install SPSS on my computer?

We would be happy to install this software for you. However, we do not have any licenses for it, so the department must first purchase the license from User Services. Then you may call Support Services to schedule the installation.

10. For what software does FSU have a Site License?

You may find all Site License details on the User Services website.

11. Does Support Services handle copier repairs?

FSU maintains a campus services & copy program that handles copier service for the College of Education. Please contact this program directly for your copier concerns.
