Jennifer Ervin, a 2009 graduate of the English Education program, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to work with adult English language learners.
Ervin will travel to Hanoi, Vietnam in August where she will receive training before beginning a ten-month assignment as an English Teacher’s Assistant (ETA) at a Vietnamese university. Ervin will work with adult learners whose conversational skills will benefit from interaction with a native English speaker.
“I have always loved travel and languages. To be able to combine the two is a perfect fit and something I have always wanted to do. I hope that my work with Vietnamese students learning English will teach me how to work with and communicate with English language learners successfully.”
In addition to teaching assignments, Ervin will organize cross-cultural activities between Vietnamese learners and native English speakers to give students more hands-on practice with English skills.
“The cross-cultural activities will be the perfect opportunity to help students learn how to work with the English language in a comfortable and conversational setting.”
Following her work in Vietnam, Ervin plans to teach in an urban school in a major metropolitan area such as New York City or Los Angeles where the need for language development among student populations is great.
Ervin is a Tallahassee native, having graduated from SAIL High School. She earned her bachelor’s in English in 2006 at Florida State and completed her master’s in English Education with a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language in December.
The Fulbright Program in Vietnam, administered and coordinated by the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, works with appropriate Vietnamese and American educational and governmental organizations to provide opportunities for study and research in the social sciences and humanities to all candidates who qualify through open competition on the basis of academic and professional merit.
