Doug Chico, a senior at Florida High, will set sail in a few short weeks. Salutatorian of the class of 2009, he has chosen to serve his country and further his education by attending the United States Naval Academy starting in July.
Chico plans on majoring in history and hopes to fulfill his desire to be a naval officer and help protect the United States. He credits his inspiring teachers with his success.
“My history teachers at Florida High had a positive influence on me. Mr. Craig, an Army officer who is currently deployed to Iraq, was an inspirational teacher as he taught the subject matter with a passion and along with many other teachers, helped me with the Academy application process. Mr. Cuccio, a Navy vet, has been a history mentor for me. I was lucky to have so many wonderful teachers.”
Even as colleges and universities increase their admissions requirements, his acceptance into the academy was just one of many prestigious institutions, including The United States Military Academy (West Point), United States Air Force Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy, University of Florida, The Florida State University and Jacksonville University.
The acceptance follows years of hard work, numerous honors and awards and high assessment scores - all accomplished while participating on the football, weightlifting and baseball teams and working part-time.
