This spring the College of Education kicked off a series of events celebrating the College of Education family and its new home in the recently expanded and renovated Mode L. Stone Building. After months of discouraging news on the state of the economy in Florida, Dean Marcy Driscoll felt compelled to lighten spirits and highlight the many accomplishments happening within the College.
“Our faculty and staff have remained diligent and productive in the face of very trying economic times,” said Driscoll. “I wanted to remind them of their own successes, share with them the successes of their colleagues, and celebrate the strides they have made.”
The occasion began with a faculty meeting focusing on positive news, such as recent faculty awards, honors and grants. Immediately following was the announcement of Besty Becker as the 2009 Mode L. Stone Distinguished Professor. Becker gave a stimulating lecture that was followed by a celebratory reception.
The festivities continued on Friday with The Marvalene Hughes Research in Education Conference. An annual event organized by the college’s Council on Research in Education (CORE), the conference allows faculty and students to share current research projects and offers opportunities for further collaboration across disciplines. The conference was made possible through the generous support of Dr. Marvalene Hughes, an alumna who has been named a College of Education Distinguished Alumna, a Florida State University Grad Made Good, and is the current president of Dillard University in New Orleans, LA.
Following the conference, faculty, staff and friends of the College of Education gathered to celebrate the new addition and renovations to the Mode L. Stone Building. Family members of former College of Education dean Mode L. Stone, for whom the building is named, joined Dean Driscoll and President T.K. Wetherell in a brief ceremony and ribbon cutting to officially christen the building. Guest were invited to a reception and tours of the new facilities following the ceremony to close a two-day celebration of education at Florida State.
