Westerhaus Leads Murphy Lecture

Charlotte F. Westerhaus, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Vice President of Diversity and Iinclusion, served as the keynote speaker as the Program in Sport Management hosted its annual M. Dianne Murphy Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday, April 3.

Westerhaus reports directly to NCAA President Myles Brand and leads the Diversity and Inclusion Office. She coordinates her efforts with the national office staff and NCAA member institutions to develop and implement strategies, policies and programs aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in intercollegiate athletics. Actions are targeted toward coaching, athletics administration and officiating at the national conference and institutional levels.

Westerhaus’ focus is to ensure that diversity and inclusion enhance the experiences of all student-athletes. Currently, she serves on several civic and professional boards, such as the Black Coaches and Administrators, United Way of Central Indiana and the Indiana Board of Bar Examiners.

The annual Murphy Lecture allows the Program in Sport Management the opportunity to invite a speaker to interact with students, faculty, administrators and community members on the role of minority and women administrators in college and university athletics and recreation programs. The establishment of the lecture series was made possible by a gift to the FSU College of Education by M. Dianne Murphy, the director of athletics at Columbia University in New York.

Murphy received her doctorate in administration and curriculum at FSU in 1980 and was celebrated by FSU as a Grad Made Good in 2005. This honor is bestowed upon former FSU students who, in the years since earning their degrees at Florida State, have achieved outstanding success and recognition in their chosen fields at the national or international levels.
