Program Overview

The Master of Science in Sport Management gives students advanced understanding of Sport Management and various components within the field. Course content focuses on applied aspects of Sport Management. Students are also required to become knowledgeable of the current literature, both applied- and research-based, and complete a practicum experience to enhance their preparation for a position in the sport industry.

 

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the master’s program are prepared for employment at entry- or mid-level positions within the sport industry. The program curriculum is continuously refined to meet industry standards established by the Council on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). Students completing the thesis track also have the option to continue on and seek admission into a doctoral program.

 

Degree Requirements

Core classes - These courses cover a range of approved content areas and focus on combining theoretical understanding with practical applications for various aspects of managing in the sport industry.

Electives - Elective courses give students the opportunity to focus on a particular area of the sport industry that interests them. There are courses specific to collegiate athletics, courses that focus on the broader industry, and socio-cultural courses focusing on current issues in the industry as a whole.

Practicum - Each student will complete a culminating practical experience, allowing them to apply what has been learned in a 'real-life' setting. Experiences include part- and full-time, volunteer and paid, and can occur almost anywhere. Practicum settings have included collegiate athletic departments, intramural departments, professional sport teams, professional sport leagues, private and public sector organizations, entrepreneurial endeavors, and many more.

Comprehensive Exams - This is the final project to be completed at the end of the coursework. This project will consist of a career portfolio developed as the student goes through the program.

Thesis - Those selecting the thesis option are engaged in learning about the research process and focusing in-depth on a particular issue in the sport industry. The thesis option is chosen by those wishing to develop a particular expertise in a certain topic area or by those with the future goal of pursuing doctoral studies.
